Meteoric Jewelry By Skydin

Firstly, even though these are hand made, I'm not a jeweler. However, my creative interests in the realm of mysticism and the esoteric have led me to create works in this form. As a visual artist I've never felt limited by the media I happen to be best at, so I often move from one media to the next as my concept needs. I often find myself in unfamiliar territory in regards to media, but I work hard to identify the qualities of the chosen media so that I can get beyond it to achieve my concept seamlessly. Originally I had set out to make jewelry for myself, so that I can wear the crystals and meteorites I have affinity for. The affinity is based on visual quality, and also vibration quality, this second quality is little understood by most. It's far too involved a subject to get into here, but metaphysics is one of my passions. So after creating a few successful pieces people wanted to buy them, the pendant furthest to the left below is an example of the first. So naturally I began to want to make jewelry for others who share these interests. When I incorporate minerals in jewelry I want to amplify the crystal's natural faceting/texture, because that is what drew me to them in the first place. The natural form of a crystal is one of the most important aspects of it's DNA or physical memory. A quartz crystal for example, wouldn't have "chosen" to be six-sided if it was irrelevant, further, all minerals wouldn't have "chosen" to be so visually involved if their appearance wasn't a major mode of "communication". In all my designs I do cut the crystal to a certain degree but I'm careful to preserve it's direction of growth and other factors of physical expression. I'm currently working on a group of Moldavite, Gibeon and Olivine meteorite jewelry. The green translucent stone you see in most of these pieces is Moldavite, which rained down to the earth 14.8 million years ago, there is a great deal of research on this stone both anthropologically and spiritually.

A slice of Gibeon meteorite, note the natural Widmanstatten pattern. I'm currently working with both these two pieces.
